Villu.... Still Top... 70/100...

By now, we all know and are well versed with the 'Vijay formula'. A formula that guarantees sure shot entertainment to his fans, even if it comes at the cost of displeasing the other audiences. Vijay's goal is to entertain his fans and the audiences, and he succeeds greatly with that formula in 'Villu' although the slightly worrying thing has been the climax of his recent films.

Vijay as Pugazh is sent on a mission by a top police official. In the process, he meets Nayanthara and falls head over heels in love with her (and also encounters Vadivelu in many comic sequences). Vijay encounters JD (Prakashraj) who is Nayanthara's father in Munich who is a dreaded criminal. Does he win Nayanthara from her father, how he deals with Prakashraj and the rest of the villian gang, does he have a past to all these encounters is what forms the crux of the movie 'Villu'.

Cinematography: Ravi Varman as the cinematographer has done a splendid job. The film looks very colorful and refreshing. The camera tricks in many sequences look convincing and superb. The highlight of the cinematography is the presence of so many Vijay's in the "Nee Kobapattal" song. Ravi Varman has showed his lead actors in a very charming manner. Just go to watch the film for Ravi Varman (if not for others!).

Rating: 9.7/10

Editing: The editing part of the film was a slight let down at quite a few places. Probably shaken by the leak of a few scenes, the intro scene seems to be hastily edited (and some of the scenes that follow it have also not been properly edited). The editing picks up quite well in the second half but it does leave you with the feeling that it could have been better.

Rating: 6/10

Music and BGM: Devi Sri Prasad has done a splendid job with the music and we know that already. His background scores (BGM) are also pretty impressive. Especially, the "Everybody..." BGM rocks and gives a very powerful impact throughout the film. His BGM's fit very well into the movie narration and enhance the film at quite a few places. He does use his previous film tunes often but he can be exempted for that because he does give that variation and makes his tunes highly attractive

Rating: 9/10

Sets & Costumes: The costumes of the film are very very colorful and attractive. The costumes of Vijay are very

eye catchy. The sets designed for the film (particularly for the songs) are also upto the mark and very attractive.

Rating: 8.4/10

Other Cast: On the whole, a pretty good job by the other cast of the film. There are some notable exceptions though. Prakashraj as JD has been wasted in yet another villanous role. A different actor could have been cast in this role with due respect to Prakashraj. Geetha as the wife of a villian has also been wasted in that role (she is a promising actor who deserves much more). Ranjitha as Vijay's mother (and wife) is convincing and makes a good comeback to the silver screen.

Vadivelu: One of the main highlights of the film is Vadivelu's comedy. Its now a ritual for Vadivelu to sport different hairstyles in a Prabudeva directed film (who can forget that 'Kung Fu kondai'?). He manages to evoke quite a few laughters in the first half and helps in making the movie as much entertaining as possible. His combination with Vijay works as usual, and both of them combine to provide us with all the laughter in the first half.

Rating: 9.5/10

Nayanthara: Nayanthara is as usual used for eye candy in this film. Though she does have more scenes in the film, you just dont remember them as much after you leave the theatre. She makes a good combination with Vijay in the dance sequences of the film. Her attempt at comedy continues not to work so much (it didnt work that well in 'Sathyam'). She is just another commercial film heroine, however with more screen space than many other heroines

Rating : 7.5/10

Prabudeva: Prabudeva disappoints with his lack of originality. If Pokkiri was a remake, Villu is inspired from the Hindi film 'Soldier' starring Bobby Deol and Preity Zinta. Added to that, some scenes in the first half remind us of some other Tamil films and other films. However, he does move the screenplay in quick fashion especially from the start of the second half. However, it would be good for him as a director if he starts working in more original scripts than the 'cut and paste' scripts that he has been doing so far.

Rating: 7/10

ILAYATHALAPATHY Vijay: If there is someone from today's generation who can carry a film on his entire shoulders and make it look and feel good, its Vijay and Vijay only. He has the required charm and grace to make any film work. Its sad that he has not been wanting to do characters that actually challenge his potential (he has oodles of potential, and I can vouch for that). For example in one scene, he cries at the death of a villian whom he had killed himself, and the way he switches between crying and laughing to make sure that the other villians dont suspect him, is JUST BRILLIANT! His role as Major Saravanan, the army officer, is very convincing and yet again showcases his potential which has been highly untapped. His dancing is as brilliant as it has always been and he keeps getting better with each film. Everyone knows that he is brilliant with the comic timing, and he yet again displays that prowess in this film. Its high time that he starts concentrating on films that fully focus on the story and also o films that challenge his acting potential.

Rating: 10/10 (The film's big savior).

Positives: Vijay, Vadivelu, Songs/BGM, Cinematography

Negatives: Climax, Prabudeva, some over the top sequences

Overall: A good family entertainer that could have been much better had they chosen a different climax. Vijay and Vadivelu rock with their comedy, the songs have been picturised very well and the film progresses at a very interesting pace (until the climax). Definitely a film worth the Pongal festival and one that has high chances of becoming a superhit.

Villu in comparison with Vijay's previous films (on a scale of 1.0 to 5.0 with 5.0 being the best)

Villu : Pokkiri - 4.0 : 4.4

Villu : ATM - 4.0 : 3.5

Villu : Kuruvi - 4.0 : 3.0

Windows 7 Public Beta Released

I don’t believe that Microsoft is going to public beta released, this how it happen…

Here’s some breaking news: At the Microsoft CES Keynote, Steve Ballmer has just announced the launch of the Windows 7 Public beta. Customers of Technet and MSDN can get the beta right away (if you hadn’t already been tempted by the various leaks) while the rest of us will have to wait until 2 days from now to snag the trial OS.

In his keynote address, Ballmer stressed that Windows 7 will provide faster performance, longer battery life, faster boot times, and a less obnoxious security alert system. Early reports from people who have tried the beta seem to back these claims up, and we’re very excited to see how the public will react to this beta.

More as it happens.

While the site that points to the beta download wasn’t working at all earlier in the day, as as CNET’s Ina Fried noted, it’s now back up but still doesn’t have the download links. But if you really, absolutely need to get Windows 7 Beta, follow the direct download links below (compliments of Wired):

Windows 7 x86 (32bit)

Windows 7 x64 (64 bit)

Microsoft still expects the actual site to be pointing to the downloads later today after it adds more infrastructure support.

Types of RAM

SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM)
Almost all systems used to ship with 3.3 volt, 168-pin SDRAM DIMMs. SDRAM is not anextension of older EDO DRAM but a new type of DRAM altogether. SDRAM started out running at 66 MHz, while older fast page mode DRAM and EDO max out at 50 MHz. SDRAM is able to scale to 133 MHz (PC133) officially, and unofficially up to 180MHz or higher. As processors get faster, new generations of memory such as DDR and RDRAM are required to get proper performance.

DDR (Double Data Rate SDRAM)
DDR basically doubles the rate of data transfer of standard SDRAM by transferring data on the up and down tick of a clock cycle. DDR memory operating at 333MHz actually operates at 166MHz * 2 (aka PC333 / PC2700) or 133MHz*2 (PC266 / PC2100). DDR is a 2.5 volt technology that uses 184 pins in its DIMMs. It is incompatible with SDRAM physically, but uses a similar parallel bus, making it easier to implement than RDRAM, which is a different technology.

Rambus DRAM (RDRAM)
Despite it's higher price, Intel has given RDRAM it's blessing for the consumer market, and it will be the sole choice of memory for Intel's Pentium 4. RDRAM is a serial memory technology that arrived in three flavors, PC600, PC700, and PC800. PC800 RDRAM has double the maximum throughput of old PC100 SDRAM, but a higher latency. RDRAM designs with multiple channels, such as those in Pentium 4 motherboards, are currently at the top of the heap in memory throughput, especially when paired with PC1066 RDRAM memory.

DIMMs RAM
DIMMs are 64-bit components, but if used in a motherboard with a dual-channel configuration (like with an Nvidia nForce chipset) you must pair them to get maximum performance. So far there aren't many DDR chipset that use dual-channels. Typically, if you want to add 512 MB of DIMM memory to your machine, you just pop in a 512 MB DIMM if you've got an available slot. DIMMs for SDRAM and DDR are different, and not physically compatible. SDRAM DIMMs have 168-pins and run at 3.3 volts, while DDR DIMMs have 184-pins and run at 2.5 volts.

RIMMs RAM
RIMMs use only a 16-bit interface but run at higher speeds than DDR. To get maximum performance, Intel RDRAM chipsets require the use of RIMMs in pairs over a dual-channel 32-bit interface. You have to plan more when upgrading and purchasing RDRAM.

Programs designed to perform specific tasks for users.

Packaged software

Term used to describe software that is bunched together making a complete set.

Example :
-Microsoft Office includes many software programs that may be used in the office, such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Access.

Custom software

(also known as Bespoke software) is a type of software that is developed either for a specific organization or function that differs from or is opposite of other already available software (also called off-the-shelf or COTS software). It is generally not targeted to the mass market, but usually created for companies, business entities, and organizations. Custom software is also when companies or governments pay for customized software for budget or project managing.
Examples of bespoke software include commercial products such as commercial websites, business databases and software for governments. Non-commercial custom software development is common in academic and open source circles.

Example :
- UBS (User Business System)
functions : accounting, payroll and stock & billing

Shareware

Shareware is usually offered as a trial version with certain features only available after the licence is purchased, or as a full version, but for a trial period. Once the trial period has passed the program will not run until a licence is purchased. Shareware is often offered without support, updates, or help menus, which only become available with the purchase of a licence. The words "free trial", "trial version" are indicative of shareware.
The term shareware is used in contrast to, retail software which refers to commercial software available only with the purchase of a licence which may not be copied for others

Example :

-Registry Mechanic® 8 for Windows® - New Version
Registry Mechanic InformationCurrent Version: 8.0.0.900
File Size: 7,339 KB
Operating System: Designed for Windows® Vista™ (32-bit and 64-bit), 2000 and XP.
Release Date: January 14, 2009
Designed to: Clean, defrag and compact your registry to optimize your PC for better performance.
Trial Limitations: The trial is time unlimited and removes problems found in 6 sections of the registry only.
A registered version is required to remove all detected problems.

Freeware

Freeware is computer software that is available for use with no cost or for an optional fee. Freeware is often made available in a binary-only, proprietary form, thus making it distinct from free software. Freeware allows authors to contribute something for the benefit of the community, while at the same time allowing them to retain control of the source code, future direction of development and preserve its business potential. Freeware is different from shareware, where the user is obliged to pay (e.g. after some trial period or for additional functionality).

Example:
-AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0.176

Not rated Average User Rating: 4.0 stars (out of 17362 votes)
Downloads: 156,788,403
Requirements: Windows 2000/XP/Vista
Limitations: No limitations
Date Added: January 05, 2009

Public domain software

Public domain software is software that is not copyrighted. If the source code is in the public domain, that is a special case of non-copylefted free software, which means that some copies or modified versions may not be free at all.
In some cases, an executable program can be in the public domain but the source code is not available. This is not free software, because free software requires accessibility of source code. Meanwhile, most free software is not in the public domain; it is copyrighted, and the copyright holders have legally given permission for everyone to use it in freedom, using a free software license.
Sometimes people use the term "public domain" in a loose fashion to mean "free" or "available gratis." However, "public domain" is a legal term and means, precisely, "not copyrighted". For clarity, the Free Software Foundation recommends using "public domain" for that meaning only, and using other terms to convey the other meanings.

Example :
- Linux OS
Linux is a free Unix-type operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers around the world.

What are the differences between ASCII and Unicode?

ASCII is a seven-bit encoding technique which assigns a number to each of the 128 characters
used most frequently in American English. This allows most computers to record and display
basic text. ASCII does not include symbols frequently used in other countries, such as the British
pound symbol or the German umlaut. ASCII is understood by almost all email and
communications software.

__

Unicode is an attempt by ISO and the Unicode Consortium to develop a coding system for electronic text that includes every written alphabet in existence. Unicode uses 8-, 16-, or
32-bitcharacters depending on the specific representation, so Unicode documents often require
up to twice as much disk space as ASCII or Latin-1 documents. The first 256 characters of Unicode are identical to Latin-1. Not all email or communications software can understand the Unicode character set.

_________________________________

What is ASCII?

ASCII is an acronym for American Standard Code for Information Interchange, a widely used standard for encoding text documents on computers. Usually, a file described as "ASCII" does not contain any special embedded control characters; you can view the contents of the file, change it with an editor, or print it with a printer.

In ASCII, every letter, number, and punctuation symbol has a corresponding number, or ASCII code. For example, the character for the number 1 has the code 49, capital letter A has the code 65, and a blank space has the code 32. This encoding system not only lets a computer store a document as a series of numbers, but also lets it share such documents with other computers that use the ASCII system. For a complete list of ASCII codes, see A table of ASCII character codes.

Documentation files or program source code files are usually stored as ASCII text. In contrast, binary files, such as executable programs, graphical images, or word processing documents, contain other characters that cannot be normally displayed or printed, and are usually illegible to human beings.

The format of a file, whether ASCII or binary, becomes important when you are transferring files between computers. For example, when using FTP, you can transfer ASCII text files without any special consideration. To exchange binary files, however, you may need to enter the command set binary or otherwise prepare the client to transfer binary files, so that the computer will correctly transmit the special characters in the file.

Note: Most current FTP software will automatically transfer ASCII and binary files correctly.

What is Unicode?

Developed in cooperation between the Unicode Consortium and the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO), Unicode is an attempt to consolidate the alphabets and ideographs of
the world's languages into a single, international character set. It focuses on the characters
themselves rather than on languages. Thus, a letter shared between English and Russian (or for
that matter, an ideograph shared between kanji and Han script) would have the same Unicode
character. As a multilingual standard, Unicode makes it possible for developers to create
applications without having to resort to the costly, time-consuming task of releasing localized
versions for each language.

Most Western character sets are 7-bit (e.g., US ASCII) or 8-bit (e.g., Latin-1), limiting them,
respectively, to 128 or 256 characters. This limitation has resulted in a slew of sets customized
for each language. For languages like Chinese, Korean, and Japanese, which use heavily
ideographic (i.e., based on the content of a word rather than its component sounds) writing
systems consisting of thousands of characters, traditional 7- and 8-bit character sets are not
adequate. Therefore, to include the character sets of the world's principal writing systems,
Unicode uses primarily a 16-bit set, allowing up to 65,536 characters. This does have the
consequence that Unicode text takes up twice as much disk space as text using an 8-bit
character set.

As a character set, Unicode does not concern itself with the specific appearance, or glyph, of a
character. Instead, it includes only a code and name for each character. Individual fonts are
assigned the tasks of rendering characters into glyphs, with the exact appearance of glyphs
varying between fonts. Similarly, Unicode does not, for the most part, distinguish between plain
and rich text, instead allowing applications to apply their own text processing and formatting.
